Nebraska sues TikTok, alleging teens are deceptively targeted

LINCOLN — Nebraska sued TikTok and its parent company ByteDance, alleging that the platform deceptively targets teens and children. The consumer-protection case is part of Attorney General Mike Hilgers’ broader push against major technology companies over alleged harms to young users.

State officials argue that young users and parents are not given truthful information about the platform’s risks and the way the app is designed to capture attention. Nebraska’s lawsuit says the company’s conduct harms minors while presenting the service as safer than it is.

The filing marked another step in the state’s efforts to challenge digital platforms that officials say are addictive by design and marketed in misleading ways to younger audiences.
